πŸ“’ New State Law Prompts Changes to Personal Communication Device Use in La Joya ISD

At the July 30, 2025 Board Meeting, La Joya ISD School Board approved a new district policy in alignment with Texas House Bill 1481, which requires school districts across the state to limit the use of personal communication devices during instructional hours.

πŸ“± What this means for our students:
Starting with the 2025–2026 school year, students in Pre-K through 12th grade will not be allowed to use cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, or similar electronic devices during the school dayβ€”from arrival to dismissal.

πŸ”’ Devices can still be brought to school, but they must be:
β€’ Turned off before entering the school building
β€’ Stored securely, either in backpacks, designated areas, or district-issued locking pouches (depending on grade level)
β€’ Left untouched until the end of the instructional day

πŸ“ Implementation will vary by campus level:
β€’ Elementary: Devices stored in backpacks or teacher-designated spaces
β€’ Middle & High School: Devices must be stored in district-provided locking pouches
β€’ HOPE and College & Career Center: No personal devices allowed on campus

⚠️ Progressive discipline will be used for violations, ranging from verbal warnings to device holds.
This policy is designed to minimize distractions and improve safety across our campuses, ensuring that students stay focused and engaged in learning.

Questions? Please reach out to your child’s school for support. For more information, please visit our website at www.lajoyaisd.com/page/cell-phone-policy
