La Joya ISD Brings Back-to-School Bash Celebration to the Community, Investing More Than $86,000 in Students and Families

La Joya, TX - For the second consecutive year, La Joya ISD made an intentional choice about how to begin the school year: instead of hosting a traditional employee convocation at a rented venue, the district brought the celebration home to the community.

The 2026 La Joya ISD Back to School Bash transformed the traditional start-of-year gathering into a districtwide community convocation centered on the people at the heart of La Joya ISD: its students and families.

Rather than directing resources toward venue rental and other expenses associated with a traditional convocation, La Joya ISD invested more than $86,000 into an experience that provided school supplies, backpacks, uniforms, food, entertainment, activities and other resources for families, all at no cost to the community.

The decision reflects a simple priority for La Joya ISD: whenever possible, district resources should create meaningful experiences and opportunities for the students and families the district serves.

On Friday, August 7, thousands of students, parents, employees and community members came together at Pack Stadium to celebrate the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year. The evening showcased the talent, spirit and pride found throughout La Joya ISD, with entertainment and performances featuring students and programs from across the district.

Families also had an opportunity to experience the district’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Jumbotron at Pack Stadium, adding a new dimension to the community celebration and showcasing another investment that will enhance student activities, athletics, fine arts and district events for years to come.

“Our Back to School Bash is about bringing the celebration to our families and making sure our community directly benefits from the experience,” said Dr. Marcey Sorensen, Superintendent of Schools. “Instead of asking our community to watch us celebrate the beginning of another school year, we invited them to be part of it. We want our students and families to see and feel that these investments are for them.”

We had school supplies, backpacks filled with school supplies, uniform shirts, spirit shirts, prizes and additional giveaways. Families also enjoyed food, rides, games, inflatables, entertainment and approximately 50 booths featuring district departments, campuses and community resources.

Most importantly, it was all provided free of charge to La Joya ISD families.

For many families, preparing multiple children for the first day of school can come with significant expenses. Through the Back to School Bash, the district was able to help place essential items directly into students’ hands while creating an evening where families could enjoy themselves together without worrying about the cost.

Throughout the event, families connected directly with campuses and district departments to learn about programs, services and resources available during the school year. Students received supplies to help them begin the year prepared, while families enjoyed an evening of food, entertainment and activities that concluded with a fireworks celebration.

The event was also an opportunity to celebrate La Joya ISD employees and the work taking place across the district, but in a setting where the community could celebrate alongside them.

This approach represents a shift in what a district convocation can look like. Rather than gathering employees inside a rented venue for an internal event, La Joya ISD chose to open the celebration to the entire community and direct resources toward an experience that students and families could enjoy and benefit from firsthand.

“When we talk about investing in our students, that investment takes many forms,” Sorensen added. “It means academics and classrooms, but it also means making sure our families feel supported, connected and proud to be part of La Joya ISD. This event allows us to begin the year together as one community.”

The Back to School Bash also highlighted the collaboration that makes an event of this scale possible. Employees from across La Joya ISD worked alongside community partners to provide resources, organize activities, welcome families and create an experience reflective of the district’s commitment to service.

For the second year, La Joya ISD’s community convocation sent a clear message about where the district wants its resources and attention focused: on its students, its families and its community.

Because at La Joya ISD, the start of the school year is not only a celebration of the work ahead. It is a celebration of the students and families for whom that work is done every day.
